On Thursday 18 March, the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) and the Government of Switzerland organized the main webinar of the “Building Bridges, Nurturing Partnership, Embrace Dialogue” project. The representatives of six youth-led NGOs/ community groups: African Young Generation in Nuclear (AYGN), Ban Ki Moon Centre for Global Citizens (BKMC), Global Young Academy (GYA), Réseau Nucléaire et Stratégie – Nouvelle Génération (RNS-NG), UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Youth and YOUNGO had a leading role in the program.
The webinar’s agenda included a working session via a closed Webex meeting for registered CYG members in breakout sessions moderated by a CYG member and representative from youth organizations. The focus of the collaborative breakout discussions was on further developing a joint product and sharing best practices from their work with event participants. A presentation of the preliminary joint initiatives was delivered by each focus group and provided the roadmap for further developing and implementing the initiatives.
A high-level session followed and featured a message from the UN’s Secretary-General's Envoy on Youth, Ms. Jayathma Wickramanayake. Two panel discussions followed.
The first panel discussed the role of youth on the SDGs and underlined the CTBTO’s global verification regime’s potential to offer a wide range of civil and scientific applications to significantly contribute to the achievement of the SDGs, being an untapped source for climate change monitoring, knowledge about the earth and poverty reduction.
The second panel featured a discussion on gender and nuclear disarmament in which the panelists provided recommendations for improvements of gender balance in STEM and the nuclear disarmament domain from the perspective of young professionals and activists.
