  • If you have not received any correspondence from your respective CT member and/or are not receiving any emails from the CTBTO staff regarding events, please make sure your email is correct on the CYG Portal (https://youthgroup.ctbto.org) and that messages from [email protected] are not being forwarded to Spam.
    • In addition, please remember to update your current location on the portal if you have moved since registering. This is important for ensuring you are up-to-date with opportunities in your region.

3. Recent Events

  • Fourth DPRK announced nuclear test anniversary, January 6
    • In the early morning hours of January 6, 2016, the Democratic People's Republic (DPRK) announced that it had conducted an h-bomb test. Twenty-seven primary seismic stations reported an unusual seismic event at the DPRK's test site, which was identified as man-made with a magnitude of 4.85, slightly less than the 2013 announced nuclear test.   • First nuclear test at the Nevada Test Site anniversary, January 27
    • The air-dropped Able test on January 27, 1951, was the first U.S. nuclear test conducted at the Nevada Test Site - the first of 928 nuclear tests, more than at any other test site in the world. Since 2011, 27 January is National Day of Remembrance for the victims of the fallout from nuclear testing in the United States. Read more here.

  • Application deadline for the Young Sustainable Impact 2019 Program, February 11
    • YSI Norway 2019 will bring youth from all around the world for a 2-week accelerator in Oslo, Norway. The aim is for you and your team to create a real startup that helps solve the sustainable development goals and are economically viable.
  • Third DPRK announced nuclear test anniversary, February 12
    • On 12 February 2013, no less than 94 seismic and two infrasound stations detected a suspicious event at the nuclear test site of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Member States received the information before the country announced that it had conducted a nuclear test shortly after. Read more here.
  • First French nuclear test anniversary, February 13
    • On February 13, 1960, France conducted its first nuclear test 'Gerboise Bleue' in the Algerian Sahara desert. With 70 kilotons, the test was unusually large for a first nuclear test. France conducted a total of 210 nuclear tests, of which 17 took place in Algeria between 1960 and 1967. Read more here.
  • Application deadline for joint UNODA - OSCE Scholarship for Peace and Security, February 13
    • Get fully funded in-person and/or online training course on conflict prevention, arms control, and disarmament.
  • Application deadline for a chance to apply for a German NGO delegation to the UN HQ in NYC to attend NPT PrepCom, February 22.
  • UNA-USA Global Engagement Summit, February 22, New York (USA)
    • The Summit convenes more than 1,000 U.S. college students and UNA-USA leaders for a day of dynamic and informative discussions on the most pressing issues facing the UN. Event participants dive deep into the mission and work of the UN.
  • Pugwash Peace & Disarmament Conference, February 23, London (UK)
    • Student/Young Pugwash UK is collaborating with British Pugwash to host a major, one-day conference exploring the prospects for arms control and disarmament over the coming years. The conference will be on 23rd February 2019 at SOAS, London. Register here. Sahil Shah (US/UK) will be speaking on CTBT EIF + universalization strategies.
  • Creation of anti-nuclear movement “Nevada-Semei” 30th anniversary, February 25-28
    • The anti-nuclear movement in Kazakhstan, "Nevada Semipalatinsk", was formed between these dates in 1989 and was one of the first major anti-nuclear movements in the former Soviet Union. It was led by author Olzhas Suleimenov and attracted thousands of people to its protests and campaigns which eventually led to the closure of the nuclear test site at Semipalatinsk in north-east Kazakhstan in 1991. The movement was named "Nevada-Semei/Semipalatinsk" in order to show solidarity with similar movements in the United States aiming to close the Nevada Test Site.
  • Carnegie Nuclear Policy Conference, March 11-12, Washington DC (USA)
    • CYG members will be participating in the youth track activities and conference at large as well as a potential roundtable with the Arms Control Association, which may see participation from GEM members (in person or virtually). If you plan on attending, please contact Grace Liu ([email protected]) so that you can be included with other CYG members.
  • European Geophysical Union (EGU) General Assembly, April 7-12, Vienna (Austria)
  • Submission deadline for the CTBTO Art Competition, April 15
    • The CTBTO has launched an art campaign for grade-school students in the lead-up to SnT2019. Students aged 5-17 are encouraged to submit a drawing or painting that fits with one of three themes detailed in the enclosed pamphlet. Selected works will be displayed in an exhibition during SnT2019, and an award ceremony will take place as a side event during the conference. While many of you fall outside this age range, we encourage you to reach out to younger siblings, family members, or friends regarding this opportunity!
  • 2019 Preparatory Committee (RrepCom) for the 2020 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) Review Conference (RevCon), April 29-May 10, New York (USA)
  • 2019 CTBT Science and Technology Conference (SnT2019), June 24-28, Vienna (Austria)
    • The application deadline for submission of abstracts for oral or poster presentations has passed. In addition, finalists for the “CTBTXSDGs: Innovation Challenge” have been notified.
