The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO) is pleased to announce the launch of the application call for the fifth anniversary cycle of the CTBTO Research Fellowship.

The program is organized in cooperation with the Center for Energy and Security Studies (CENESS) and is designed to empower a new generation of professionals in nuclear nonproliferation, disarmament, and arms control by offering a unique opportunity to engage directly with prominent international experts in the field, connect with like-minded peers from all around the world, and strengthen research and writing skills in a collaborative environment.

A core component of the CTBTO Research Fellowship is a virtual webinar series, scheduled to run from late August to December 2025. This online course will feature expert-led sessions on key CTBT-related topics such as the role of the Treaty within the broader global nonproliferation regime, pathways to facilitate the CTBT’s entry into force, national experiences with ratification, and regional perspectives on CTBT-related challenges.

Among distinguished scholars and practitioners who joined the previous cycles of the Research Fellowship as speakers were CTBTO Executive Secretary Dr. Robert Floyd, U.N. High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, former Head of the Russian Delegation to the Negotiations of the CTBT Amb. Grigory Berdennikov, former Under Secretary of State for Arms Control and International Security Ms. Rose Gottemoeller, former Head of the Chinese Delegation to the Negotiations of the CTBT Amb. Sha Zukang.

The opening high-level session with CTBTO Executive Secretary Dr. Robert Floyd is scheduled to take place on August 22 (Friday), at 15.00 CET.

In addition to the webinar series, another key component of the Fellowship is a collaborative research project. Under the mentorship of the organizers, selected participants will work in multinational research teams to explore critical CTBT-related issues. The resulting papers will be published in the CTBTO’s annual electronic magazine. A collection of papers prepared by the 2024 cohort of fellows can be found here
