The United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) has launched the #75 Words4Disarmament Youth Challenge inviting young people up to 29 years old to express what disarmament means to them and their communities in 75 words. The challenge provides an opportunity to think about disarmament not as an abstract concept but as a practical means to help prevent armed conflict and promote peace and security.

The Challenge started on 12 August, International Youth Day and will close on 26 September which marks the International Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons. What does #disarmament mean to you? Today, on Int’l Youth Day, we’re launching the ‘75 Words for Disarmament Youth Challenge’ and asking you to share what ‘disarmament’ means to you and your community in 75 words to help spread the importance of disarmament. The contest will run until Int’l Day for the Total Elimination of Nuclear Weapons on 26 September, with a number of winning entries selected. A panel of judges will select five entries per age group to be featured on the @youth4disarmament Instagram account, with entries put to a people’s vote via ‘likes’. The winners will be invited to read their entries in self-recorded videos to be featured on UN #Youth4Disarmament platforms in celebration of the annual #DisarmamentWeek (24-30 October). Words offer us a powerful way to make sense of our thoughts and share our unique perspectives. Why 75? 2020 marks the 75th anniversaries of the establishment of the @UnitedNations and the atomic bombings of #Hiroshima and #Nagasaki. So submit your entries here and join the campaign: bit.ly/75words #75Words4Disarmament #UN #UnitedNations #Youth4Disarmament #Youth4Peace #YouthPeaceSecurity #Disarmament
